Philippines Ferry Disaster Death Toll Nears Forty

(MENAFN) The fatality count from a catastrophic maritime incident in the Philippines has climbed to 39, Philippine News Agency confirmed Sunday, as recovery efforts persist following last week's vessel tragedy.

Three additional bodies were retrieved Sunday during ongoing search and rescue missions for the submerged M/V Trisha Kerstin 3, according to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG).

"The total number of fatalities has risen to 39, while the survivor count remains at 316," the PCG said.

The ill-fated M/V Trisha Kerstin 3 was traveling toward Jolo Island in Sulu province when it went under near Baluk-Baluk Island, Basilan. Crew members transmitted an emergency distress call at approximately 1:50 a.m. (1750GMT) on Jan. 25—four hours following its departure from the Port of Zamboanga City located on Mindanao's southwestern coast.

Maritime disasters have plagued the island nation repeatedly, with the Philippines' 7,000-island geography relying heavily on sea transport. Inadequate regulation and substandard vessel maintenance have contributed to the archipelago's deadly track record of ferry accidents.
